To install pot lights or recessed lighting you need to locate your beams.

Select cable according to the circuit rating 14 gauge for 15 amp and 12 gauge for 20 amp.
Drill a hole through the drywall ceiling at each light location using a drill and 6 inch diameter hole saw.
Cut the hole with a drill with a hole cutting attachment and mark all light locations.
Choose locations that fall between joists and away from other obstructions.
