Batt insulation is the most cut and dry when it comes to installing garage ceiling insulation. Fumes can seep in underneath the wall framing where the wood rests on the concrete or block foundation. Regulate your garage s temperature all year by installing insulation. Make sure you have enough ventilation on your roof as well.

Measure the height and width between the framing in the ceiling and pre cut the pieces you ll need. Be sure to count the spaces above doors and windows. Take the cut piece of insulation up to the rafters. Run a bead of silicone caulk along the bottom of the wall between the wood and the concrete.

Insulating the ceiling of your garage involves the same process as insulating the walls. Purchase rolls or packages of insulation that will fit in the spaces between the ceiling joists. The standard width for joists is 24 inches. To prepare determine the area of the space you plan to insulate and add 10 to 20 percent to account for mistakes and odd spaces you need to fill.

Just remember to use thicker r 40 insulation. If you are insulating the garage ceiling not only by the truss level but also up by the roofline then you must leave at least 1 1 2 to two inches of air between the fiberglass and the underside. There is a school of that maintains that an unheated garage that is attached to the house may get some benefit from insulating the walls and ceilings of the garage since it theoretically offers an additional thermal buffer. Once the pieces are cut to size installation is fairly straight forward.

Step 4 staple the piece to the joists shooting the staples through the paper tabs on the sides of the insulation into the sides of the joists. In reality insulation merely slows the transfer of heat through the insulated barrier wall ceiling floor etc. There should be a continuous ridge and soffit ventilation. This will help while you re up on the ladder.
